Glenfiddich!

Glenfiddich’s history began in 1886, when William Grant set out to build his own distillery and to make “the best dram in the valley.” With his nine children and one professional stonemason, he accomplished this feat in just one year.  On Christmas Day, 1887, the first spirit flowed from the still. The distillery is adjacent to the River Fiddich, and “Glenfiddich” is the Scots Gaelic word meaning “Valley of the Deer”.  It is located in the town of Dufftown, about an hour’s drive west of Aberdeen, in the heart of the whisky-producing region of the Highlands called “Speyside”.

Glenfiddich is unique among Scottish distilleries for many reasons, including

·        It is still in the hands (5th generation) of the original founding Scottish family. Only one other distillery in Scotland can make a similar claim.

·        It created the category of single malt Scotch in 1963 by exporting its product under its own name. Prior to this, all whiskies were sold to blenders for the production of blended Scotch.

·        It is the largest selling and most awarded single malt in the world, sold in over 188 countries.

·        It uses the same water source throughout every stage of production, including reducing the cask-strength percentage of alcohol to commercial bottle strength, after the whisky has aged in the warehouse for 12 to over 30 years.

From June through September each year, Glenfiddich sponsors a dozen Highland Games in Scotland, including the Royal Braemar Gathering, at which members of the Royal Family attend, including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. As a child, William Grant may well have watched the Highland Games in the Speyside area, unaware that over a hundred years later the whisky he would produce would be a major sponsor of the events, helping to retain this important part of Scottish culture for the generations to come.

At this year’s San Diego Scottish Highland Games, two seminars and whisky tastings will be held in the Recreation Center each day at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.  The seminars are free. A sampler tray of Glenfiddich 12, 15, 18, and 21 year old single malt will be offered for $10 for those over 21 years of age.
